The primary goal of therapeutic riding and hippo therapy is to learn riding and horsemanship skills while reaping therapeutic effects allowing riders to benefit in such areas as increased postural control, improved walking, balance, strength, speech, etc.
Therapeutic Riding is an equine-assisted activity for the purpose of contributing positively to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of individuals with special needs. it provides benefits in the areas of health, education, sport and recreation & leisure. occurs in one hour long lessons with 1-4 riders, grouped based on similar cognitive or physical ability, age, and/or therapeutic goals.
Lessons aim to teach riding skills and, eventually, provide the rider with the skills and experience to become an independent rider. The Therapeutic benefits include an increase in muscle tone, strength, self-esteem, coordination, balance, social interaction and communication, and development of a sense of control.
Hippotherapy consists of intensive one-on-one therapy sessions with a licensed therapist who utilizes the unique qualities of the horse as a therapy means. The movement of the horse at a walk mimics the rider’s own pelvic movement, providing a distinctive opportunity that cannot be duplicated in traditional clinical settings. Physically, the horse moves in a three-dimensional pattern similar to the action of the human pelvis during normal, upright movement, and thus Hippotherapy offers an increased potential for walking and normal hip development for individuals living with disabilities. Upper body benefits include improved hand/eye coordination, posture and balance, and core strength.
Volunteers will assist riders who are unable to independently control their horses by leading the horse and/or by side-walking alongside those who are unable to stay safely mounted by themselves.
Come prepared by wearing sturdy shoes or boots, long pants and bring a water bottle.
